“Not Consent”, 3 fabric banners (2018 – 2022).

“Not Consent” protests victim blaming in sexual assault cases, being conceived upon hearing a defendant was found not guilty of rape due to the victim wearing lace undies which was considered to be signalling consent. I protest this “signalling consent” attitude by using semaphore, an analogue signalling system whereby hand-held flags are positioned to signal alphabet letters. In this work fabric squares contain a female symbol holding flags onto which lace undies are stitched, with each square signalling a semaphore alphabet letter. Squares are sewn together forming banners. One side of a large double-sided banner spells “Not Consent”, the other “No Means No”. Two single-sided banners spell “No Shame” and “Not A Slut”.
